Petersburg, Texas - Manufacturing Welding Operations Manager

 

Job Summary:

Located at our Manufacturing facilities in Petersburg, Texas, under the general direction of the VP of Manufacturing, the Welding Manager is responsible and accountable to provide all instructions and procedures necessary to complete weldments in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and production / customer requirements. The Welding Manager will work closely with the Project Engineer and the Fabrication and Assembly Managers during all phases of a project starting with the inquiry stage through successful completion of assembly and production.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:

Ensure a safe working environment is maintained at all times and take responsibility to report and ensure resolution of any observed safety hazard.
In collaboration with all support functions, strive to do things right the first time.
Provide technical welding support during the production and manufacturing process.
Review project specifications, project documents, and relevant codes and standards to determine welding requirements and welding material requirements.
Assign qualified weld procedures or qualify new weld procedures as required for a project.
Provide instructions for development of new weld procedures and follow through by monitoring the welding and testing of these new procedures.
Determine welding material requirements for each project and complete a Bill of Material for purchase in accordance with schedule requirements.
Participate in welding R&D efforts including the timely completion of all assigned actions in support of company and departmental strategic goals.
Respond to shop and field questions and/or non-conformances in a timely manner.
Learn and remain current with all applicable codes and standards.
Participate in welder training to ensure the company maintains the expertise and skills required to achieve first-time quality results in a productive manner.
Participate in general process improvements and initiatives with the focus on improved quality and throughput and also forecasting for production runs.
Scheduling of production runs and weekly scheduling to maximize efficiency of weld shop. 
Manages and oversees all north steel plant employees, ensures administration functions associated with these employees, and enforces all applicable attendance policies and procedures as well as remaining polices of Wylie employee handbook.

Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge is qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

Education/ Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing or related field with an emphasis on Welding.
3 or more years of welding management experience required.
3 or more years in an ASME and/or heavy metal fabrication preferred.

Good mechanical aptitude
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products


Knowledge

Good understanding of welding processes strongly preferred.
Good knowledge of welding equipment, including GTAW (manual and semi-automatic), SMAW, and GMAW/FCAW (semi-automatic and machine) preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

 

Combination of office and plant environment. Exposed to any number of elements, but none present to the extent of being disagreeable. Required to sit or stand and move about the facility. Occasional lifting of items not to exceed 50 lbs. Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability required. General Safety, OSHA, Environmental and other pertinent Safety considerations as it relates to overall Manufacturing Operations. Lean Manufacturing & Quality System Awareness preferred.  Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.
